Hemp Crop Adaptation

Published

on

Hemp and Cannabis crops are serving as a pipeline of interest and income for farmers who jumped on the bandwagon and were able to produce the crop in bulk.

Often, Hemp and Cannabis are known for their marijuana purposes, but to the surprise of many, its versatility and adaption abilities are quite extensive, with there being three species of the hemp plant itself.

The Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance reports that the three species are Cannabis sativa L., Cannabis indica and Cannabis ruderalis, with Cannabis sativa L. a subspecies of Cannabis, better known as “hemp” and is a “non-psychoactive form of cannabis”.

Cannabis sativa L. is taller than the other species and is randomly branched, high in fiber and grain making it perfect for products and industrial use.

Cannabis indica does not have good fiber quality and is often used to make drugs for recreation and medicine.  This particular species is often short, conical and densely branched.

As for Cannabis ruderalis, it’s not common in North America, but it’s the species that produces “flowers based on its age” known as auto flowering. The other species produce flowers based on the light cycle.

The first two hemp types have a long history here in the U.S., especially in Pennsylvania during the 1700s when hemp was being used for “oil mills that pressed the excess hemp seed into oil, which was used in paints, ink, varnishes, and lamp oil.”

Penn State research reports that this isn’t too different from today. Cannabis sativa L. is often referred to as “industrial hemp,” and is used for its fiber and seeds, while “marijuana cultivars are grown for high levels of THC.”

Industrial hemp can be adapted into textiles to make clothing, shoes, ropes, nets, carpets, tarps and into landscaping supply like mulch, composting, protein flour and seed cake, and animal bedding. Hemp oil is also popular— soap, beauty products, moisturizer and birdseed include industrial hemp.

These kinds of hemp-based products have brought over $688 million in the United States in 2016

Yet, other adaptations of the crop involve its growth, climate and geographical circumstances.

The Frontiers in Plant Science journal released a study two years ago called, “Latitudinal Adaptation and Genetic Insights into the Origins of Cannabis sativa L.”

The study covered “645 Cannabis individuals (derived from 52 accessions: 25 wild populations and 27 domesticated populations or cultivars), and four closely related out group species, Humulus scandens, Humulus yunnanensis, Humulus lupulus, and Aphananthe aspera.”

Researchers looked at the mainphenological and morphological traits for each accession, including “initiation of flowering, full flowering, seed full maturity time, stem diameter, plant height, and number of branches” and “the correlations between the phenotypes and latitude were assessed, and all six traits had a negative, very strong, and significant relationship with latitude of origin.”

This means that the study found that the flowering on cannabis plants follow not only a period of light but also need an uninterrupted period of darkness— 10-12 hours at the least. Shortening the day’s length, therefore can help stimulate plant pre-flowering while prolonged day length can contribute to delayed vegetative and reproductive stages for the plant.

These kinds of adaptations show that growing hemp in different geographical locations at certain times of the year when the sun is exposed based on the region’s season is a contributor to hemp farmer challenges and something to be aware of.

Indeed, hemp crops grown in the south “have extended vegetative cycles and failed to produce seeds when grown in the North, High latitude areas,”according to the study.

Hemp crops, therefore, not only have adaptations in their purposes beyond marijuana in both medicinal and recreational uses, but also have adaptations in their stages of growth as a crop in itself.

CBD Oil: Nature’s Therapeutic Treasure

In the dynamic world of cannabis, CBD oil takes center stage as a revered and widely discussed product. Renowned for its myriad benefits, CBD oil has garnered a global following. Unlike other cannabis products, CBD oil is THC-free, offering the advantages of cannabis without intoxication. Among its merits are anxiety reduction, pain relief, and improved sleep quality. With the potential to enhance overall well-being, CBD oil’s demand is on a continuous ascent.

Edibles: A Delicious Revolution

Edibles are rapidly gaining traction among those seeking the therapeutic benefits of marijuana without the need to smoke. The array of edibles is vast, ranging from delectable options like brownies and gummies to tea and popcorn. Their discreet nature allows individuals to consume them inconspicuously, and their effects tend to last longer compared to traditional smoking methods. As the demand for cannabis products rises, edibles have firmly established themselves in the industry.

Tinctures: A Versatile Elixir

Tinctures have emerged as a preferred choice among cannabis enthusiasts and advocates. Created by extracting active cannabis compounds using alcohol or glycerin, tinctures provide a discreet way to achieve rapid absorption by placing them under the tongue. Precise dosing and ease of use set tinctures apart from other cannabis products. Whether you seek natural pain relief, anxiety reduction, or a relaxing interlude, tinctures are a top choice for many cannabis users.

Topicals, a recent addition to the world of cannabis products, have quickly gained favour among consumers. These products are applied to the skin, offering targeted relief for various issues, including pain, inflammation, and skincare concerns. Unlike other cannabis products, topicals do not induce a psychoactive effect, making them ideal for those seeking the benefits of cannabis without feeling altered. Ongoing research into their potential uses is expected to increase the popularity of topicals in the cannabis industry.

Concentrates: The Potent Powerhouses

Concentrates have taken the cannabis industry by storm, celebrated as one of the most ground-breaking products in recent years. Published

Burna Boy, the celebrated Afro-fusion Grammy awarded artist from Nigeria, made headlines when he courageously declined a staggering $5 million performance offer in Dubai. What fueled this remarkable decision? His unwavering passion for personal freedom and an unapologetic commitment to his values.

In a  viral video Burna Boy can be seen jamming with his band , during this impromptu performance he shocked his fans by revealing that he had rejected a multimillion-dollar offer to perform in Dubai due to a seemingly unconventional reason – his desire to smoke weed.

Burna Boy has always been vocal about his affection for marijuana, which he views as a tool for self-expression and creative inspiration. However, there was a significant catch to the Dubai offer – the stringent anti-drug laws that would prohibit him from indulging in his passion while on stage.

Burna Boy’s refusal of the offer was an unequivocal stance in defense of his artistic freedom. This decision demonstrated his unwavering dedication to his values, even as he ventured into the cannabis industry, introducing his own brand, BRKFAST, in the United States just last year.

Burna Boy’s choice evoked a mix of responses. Some lauded him for remaining true to his principles, viewing it as a testament to his authenticity as an artist. In contrast, others questioned his decision, highlighting the substantial financial security he sacrificed. Nevertheless, Burna Boy’s resolute decision underscored his commitment to his craft and personal values.

Though he might have forfeited a substantial $5 million, Burna Boy’s integrity remained. His unwavering commitment to his principles continues to inspire those who place artistic freedom above material gain. His journey serves as a poignant reminder that personal principles can often hold more value than monetary wealth, underscoring the potency of individuality and the courage to uphold one’s convictions, irrespective of the cost.

In the end, it was about more than just declining a lucrative booking for Burna Boy. It was about staying authentic to himself, a choice that he deemed priceless.
